羅浮堡大學前身是一個小型的技術學院，後來發展為學院並加入大學體育聯盟，1957年成為高等理工學院，此後學校發展迅速，1966年後正式成為大學，目前共有科學、工程、社會科學和人文三個學院。羅浮堡大學是除了牛津大學外獲得過6次女王周年獎的大學。羅浮堡大學（Loughborough University）約有12000名全讀的學生，國際學生佔約10%，來自將近100個不同的國家，其中有60位來自台灣。因此在英國留學期間，可以交到許多外國的朋友。
目前，羅浮堡大學總共有24個系所及30個學術研究機構可供學生選擇，而該校最引以自豪的就是在工程科學以及運動方面的傑出表現。至於其他深具口碑亦受學生青睞的科系包括：化學、電腦科學、人文科學、資訊科學、數學、物理學以及聚合物技術與材料工程學。
